I have chosen to look at BBC’s Doctor Who from the return of the show in 2005. This show started in 1963, making this year the 50th anniversary, and has gone through 26 seasons from 1963-89, one movie and 7 series since the return of the show. It is a well loved British children's show though people of many ages have a special place for it in their hearts. It has even merited a few spin off series featuring beloved characters such as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Themes:

  • I will first look at the brief history of the show discussing the premise as well as who the Doctor is. In this section I will be also discussing the premise of why the show is called Doctor Who and how it is important not just to the show but also to the potential  religious meanings behind why he does not have a known name.

  • I will be discussing how the show deals with the regenerations of the Doctor. It allows for the show to continue on easily with new actors but also it deals with life and death.

  • I will look at the different villains and how they can demonstrate different aspect of religion. I will focus on the Master and his relationship to the Doctor, the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Weeping Angels.

  • I will finally look at the different Christ/God analogies within the show. The world and his faithful companions believing in the Doctor as well as the other characters who take on the role, such as Rose.

Arguments:

  • Is the Doctor a God or Christ figure? His own religion?

  • Is the show mean to portray religion, Christianity and Buddhism? Is it in fact atheistic?

  • How is religion dealt with in the show?
